Varicose Veins

25 percent of women and 15 percent of men have varicose veins. The condition is due to the result of problems with valves within the veins of the leg.

  • Veins: - Veins returns deoxygenated blood from the outer part of the body back to the lungs and heart .Veins are blood vessels

  • Varicose Veins: -When veins become abnormally thick, swollen, with full of twists and turns, and sometimes becomes enlarged then they are called varicose veins. It mostly occurs in legs and thighs .Varicose veins get filled with an abnormal collection of blood in legs. Varicose veins are commonly found in the superficial veins in legs, which results in high pressure while standing or walking. Physicians which deal in varicose veins are called phlebologists.

How Does Veins Work

Veins have leaflet valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards .Leg muscles pumps the veins to return blood to the heart, against the effects of gravity. When veins become varicose, the leaflets of the valves no longer meet properly, and the valves do not work. This allows blood to flow backwards and they enlarge even more.

Causes of Varicose Vein

  • It is sometimes inherited by our ancestors
  • Obesity
  • Menopause
  • Aging
  • Defective valves from birth (congenitally defective valves)
  • Pregnancy
  • Some people may be born with abnormalities of the vein wall.
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Standing for a long time may increase pressure in abdomen and may develop varicose veins

Signs and symptoms
  • Aching, heavy legs (often worse at night and after exercise).
  • Whitened, irregular scar-like patches may appear at the ankles known as atrophie blanche.
  • Swelling of Ankle.
  • Shiny skin discoloration near the affected veins (brownish blue).
  • Bleeding may occur on minor injuries and may take long time to heal.
  • Redness, dryness, and itchiness of on skin
