BMI vs BFP : BFP (Body Fat Index) is what that matters.
What is BFP (Body Fat Index):
Body fat percentage is simply the percentage of fat your body contains. If you weigh 140 pounds and have 10% fat, it means that your body consists of 14 pounds fat and 126 pounds lean body. remember that a certain amount of fat is essential to bodily functions. Fat regulates body temperature, cushions and insulates organs and tissues and is the main form of the body's energy storage.
Why BFP (Body Fat Index) matters:
Body Mass Index has been a fitness parameter for long where it is calculated based on a person height and weight. We have also seen the charts containing the specific BMI values for a given height and weight in most of the fitness centers but then let me tell you that if you are using this parameter to assess your fitness level then you are doing yourself nothing good.
The obvious question here one may ask- WHY?
The answer to this "WHY" is that Body Mass Index takes into consideration only a person's height and weight to calculated the BMI value , it does not consider body composition (How much is muscle and how much is fat?), and so two people with same height and weight will have the same BMI however they will have different BODY FAT PERCENTAGES and hence different fitness levels.
This can be understood by this example- There are two persons with the same height of 6 feet and same weight of 100 kg, however one of them is obese who has never been to a fitness center and so has higher fat and less muscles however the second one is regular to gym and so has a flaunting physique with no extra fat and ripped muscles. The BMI would be same for both the two persons however the BFP (Body Fat Index) will be completely different.
Therefore, BODY FAT PERCENTAGE is an ideal indicator of fitness.
