International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace offers people globally a shared date to think about how, individually, they can contribute to ensuring that natural resources are managed in a sustainable manner, thus reducing potential for disputes, and paving the road to a sustainable future, the "Future We Want".

Please support International Day of Peace by helping us raise awareness of the event. Share this message with everyone you know. You are responsible for the world you see, change your mind and the world will be transformed.

Peace is a common desire for peoples throughout the world. The establishment of the United Nations in 1945, at the end of the most devastating war in human history, was an embodiment of this universal desire. Keeping peace and developing friendly relations among nations are among the main objectives of the United Nations.

The meaning of International Peace Day The original meaning of International Peace Day (or IPD) was simply that it was meant to be recognized as a day of non violence where all countries at war would honor a cease fire for that day alone. Today, many cities throughout the world hold celebrations and have peace marches to honor world peace.

"On this International Day, let us promise to make peace not just a priority, but a passion. Let us pledge to do more, wherever we are in whatever way we can, to make every day a day of peace."
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon

This year's theme is"Sustainable Peace for Sustainable Development", in line with the "Rio +20 Conference" held in Brazil this year, world leaders, civil society organizations and other met to renew their commitment to long term sustainable development. A sustainable future depends on a sustainable peace, which in turn is contingent with sustainable development.

History of International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace, sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day, is observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and peoples.

To commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace both within and among all nations of the world, the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 proclaimed the opening day of its regular session as the International Day of Peace.

About the Peace Bell

The Japanese Peace Bell is a United Nations peace symbol. It was presented to the United Nations in June 1954 by the United Nations Association of Japan, at a time when Japan had not yet been officially admitted to the United Nations.

The bell itself is housed in a typically Japanese structure, resembling a Shinto shrine, made of cypress wood. Inscribed on one side of the bell are the Japanese characters that say: "Long live absolute world peace!".
