World Earth Day

April 22 - 42nd Anniversary of World Earth Day On April 22nd more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day 2013. To mobilize the Earth this day is celebrated for a week. We should all come together and say "Give a Chance" which is the theme for this year. Some people celebrate Earth Day around the time of the March Equinox, others observe the occasion on April 22 each year. People unite on Earth Day to appreciate and respect earth's environment.

Earth Day is celebrated to bring people all together of all nationalities and backgrounds to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water, soil pollution, appreciation for the planet and demand for its protection. To have a safe, bright and sustainable future we should bring individuals, organizations, and governments forward to do their part of work to save a planet.

History of World Earth Day
Senator Gaylord Nelson was the founder, to raise voice to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet. United States started celebrating "World Earth Day" on April 22, 1970. In 1978, American anthropologist Margaret Mead added her support for the equinox Earth Day, founded by John McConnell.

Since that day, Earth Day was celebrated globally, to create awareness and to encourage people for the Earth's environment and to save Earth and today, more than 500 million people in 175 countries celebrates Earth Day.

What is special this year?
This year key focus is to organize a "Campaign for Communities" which is a platform for leaders around the world to engage their communities in discussions about the challenges and opportunities related to sustainability and to come up with real solutions. This year we should all encourage people around the world to put pressure on local, national and international leaders and governments to take strong, real action to protect and conserve our ailing environment. This is the way to encourage people to come together, to learn more about our environment and to take positive action.

How we should celebrate World Earth Day
There are certain activities which are being suggested to perform this day: -
  • Outdoor performances involving individuals or groups performance acts of service to earth can be performed.
  • Plant trees.
  • Conducting various programs for recycling and conservation.
  • Using recyclable containers for snacks and lunches.
  • Encourage people to sign petitions to governments, calling for stronger or immediate action to stop global warming and to reverse environmental destruction.
  • Symbols used by people to describe Earth Day include: an image or drawing of planet earth; a flower or leaves depicting growth of a tree, or the recycling symbol.
  • Colors used for Earth Day include natural colors such as green, brown or blue.
John McConnell designed the "Earth Flag", and has been described as a "flag for all people". It features a two-sided dye printed image of the Earth from space on a dark blue field, made from recyclable, weather-resistant polyester. Margaret Mead who went on space believed that a flag that showed the earth as seen from space was appropriate.
